Program notes

Witness the mastery of two of today’s greatest pianists, Martha Argerich and Alexandre Kantorow, as they join forces for the first time for an extraordinary evening of irresistible Romantic music at the 2026 Verbier Festival. The two titans unite their wealth of experience and artistic flair to perform Shostakovich's lively Concertino for Two Pianos and Rachmaninov's haunting and richly allusive Symphonic Dances. Argerich is also joined on stage at the Verbier Church by acclaimed mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kožená for a sublime rendition of Robert Schumann’s beloved song cycle, Dichterliebe (A Poet’s Love). These 16 Lieder, originally composed for baritone voice, depict the romantic trials and tribulations of a poet, from the all-consuming passion he feels for his fiancée, through the bitter disillusionment caused by her leaving, to his ultimately tragic state of despair.
